English Translation of this article, down below the French one here :

http://www.fredericback.com/cineaste/filmographie/lhomme-qui-plantait-des-arbres/index.fr.shtml

http://www.newsbharati.com/Encyc/2014/1/25/Jadav-Payeng-turns-barren-sandbar-into-lush-green-forest.aspx

THE MAN THAT SINGLE HANDEDLY PLANTED a 1,360-acre FOREST

Message  OYABIO Mer 13 Mar - 18:54

Some of you know about this 1953 book by French writer Jean GIONO called THE MAN THAT PLANTED TREES http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Man_Who_Planted_Trees   .... even an animation movie has been made by Frédéric Back' s animation, 1987 Société Radio-Canada :

https://youtu.be/LLDEL-ZPqaQ

and you may think this is only a book and an animated nice movie.......but think twice, because some people around the world have done just that in the physical world....and this guy in India seems like the Master of all ARTS......in his achievment during this life time

http://www.newsbharati.com/Encyc/2014/1/25/Jadav-Payeng-turns-barren-sandbar-into-lush-green-forest.aspx

Jadav PAYENG (India) single-handedly planted a 1,360-acre forest on a soil that he was told could only take Bamboos....not trees...but read on, this Marvelous Love Story of a GOOD MAN.....a Man of GOOD and Intelligence....

It all started way back in 1979, when floods washed a large number of snakes ashore on the sandbar. One day, after the waters had receded, Payeng, only 16 then, found the place dotted with the dead reptiles. That was the turning point of his life.

"The snakes died in the heat, without any tree cover. I sat down and wept over their lifeless forms.
It was carnage. I alerted the forest department and asked them if they could grow trees there. They said nothing would grow there. Instead, they asked me to try growing bamboo. It was painful, but I did it. There was nobody to help me," he told the newspaper.

Now that once-barren sandbar is a sprawling 1,360 acre forest, home to several thousands of varieties of trees and an astounding diversity of wildlife -- including birds, deer, apes, rhino, elephants and even tigers.

The forest, aptly called the "Molai woods" after its creator's nickname, was single-handedly planted and cultivated by one man -- Payeng, who is now 47. http://www.google.com/search?q=Molai+woods+%28India%29&hl=en&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=icpAUaiXK8uu4QTD_4HQAw&ved=0CFcQsAQ&biw=1024&bih=487

According to the Asian Age, Payeng has dedicated his life to the upkeep and growth of the forest. Accepting a life of isolation, he started living alone on the sandbar as a teenager -- spending his days tending the burgeoning plants.

Today, Payeng still lives in the forest. He shares a small hut with his wife and three children and makes a living selling cow and buffalo milk, OddityCentral.com reports.

According to the Assistant Conservator of Forests, Gunin Saikia, it is perhaps the world’s biggest forest in the middle of a river.

"We were surprised to find such a dense forest on the sandbar," Saikia told the Times Of India, adding that officials in the region only learned of Payeng's forest in 2008.

Finally, Payeng may get the help -- and recognition -- he deserves.

"Once Elephants took refuge in his forest after some rampage in the neighbouring villages and the [Locals] wanted to cut down the forest, to capture the Elephants, but Payeng dared them to kill him instead. He treats the trees and animals like his own children. Seeing this, we, too, decided to pitch in help him ," Saikia said.

"We're amazed at Payeng," says Gunin Saikia, assistant conservator of Forests. "He has been at it for 30 years. Had he been in any other country, he would have been made a hero."
